About Me

I am a professional nerd, passionate about wildlife and environmental protection, farm sanctuary volunteer, who believes vegan is The Way, and Virginia wine is better than yours. I was, and still am, Mina’s devoted human companion and I miss her more than anyone can imagine.

I’ve always been an animal lover, I’ve been vegetarian for 20 years and a more-ethical-by-the-day vegan since 2002, but getting actively involved with animal rights and wildlife conservation started with a wee baby panda named Tai Shan.

Things sort of snowballed from there and I thought that writing a blog would reach a few more people than just my close friends and that led to learning about all sorts of other people who devote their lives to wildlife protection, environmental protection, animal rights activism, you name it. I’m still learning and I hope to learn more every day. My Dad used to tell me that I come from a long line of “late bloomers.” I guess it doesn’t matter when you find your passion in life, as long as you find it.

  16. Hi Sheryl, I was just reading some comments on Wildlife Direct and noticed an old blog about your interest in David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. I fostered Makena back in February, and get regular monthly updates on her progress and about all the units. They are absolutely gorgeous. Just thought you might like to know a new little three week old bull has just arrived at the trust named Kimana. He is gorgeous and so small, just in case you fancied becoming a foster parent. Great site by the way.

  17. Hi Sheryl,

Great work! All the time you were leaving comments on my blog (http://thewaterhole.wildlifedirect.org) I believe you told me to check out your blog…i guess…but i never did. Then I end up here by chance! In Swahili i say ”pole sana” (meaning ”sorry”) for not visiting your blog earlier.

Otherwise this is indeed passion. 1 million people like you and the planet is saved!

    Cheers,
    Maina

  20. Sheryl,

Thank goodness for people like you. I do what I can, but know that in the future I will do more for animals.
I cannot believe that in this day and age, animals are tortured and abused in methods that most people don’t even know about. If your message reaches just a few more people every day, you will be creating a snowball effect that help change the world.

    Thank you.

  21. Hi Sheryl,
Always a lot of important information you provide for us – thanks for what you do.
And thanks for your recent comment on my blog/art for gorillas. I think Emmanuel and his colleagues will do great work for the gorillas in DRC/Virunga Mountains.
    Take care,
    Julie

  22. Hi, I am so glad I found your site! It’s just wonderful, thank you for being a voice – wish there were more people like you – you know, who actually do something to help instead of sitting by on the sidelines. I am a vegetarian and advocate. I became involved in 1991 after learning about elephants slaughtered for their ivory in a NG magazine. Things (as you would say) snowballed from there and I got deeper into animal welfare/rights issues and became vegetarian in 1998. This also led to a passion for recycling and taking care of the environment. I have a website that addresses animal cruelty and environmental concerns too. Please, feel free to stop by sometime. Thanks again for your efforts and good luck to you!

  23. hello… Love your site – have linked to it on my blog as well. Just an observation though… your link to compassion over killing isn’t correct – It’s definately not: http://www.cok.net/
Thought you’d want to correct that…
Anyway, thanks for all you do for the animals -

  24. Ha! Yeah, it is actually cok.net but I’d typed cok.org. Oops. Thanks for catching it.

  28. I became vegetarian four years ago and many things have changed since then. Pleased to metet you.

    From Spain,

    Peter.

  29. Great blog… you came at the “non-dairy cheese” issue in a way sympatico to my own, although my focus is more on heart disease issues.

But, love your similar “take no prisoners” attitude AND that you back up what you say with facts and links.

I plan to mention your blog on mine in the near future AND in the next issue of the Mad Cowboy Newsletter (which I edit: 4500+ subscribers).

You’re doing some fine work, kiddo.

    Best regards, Mark

  30. Great site, just been poking around. Saw your article on vegan “cheese” and it prompted me to send Daiya an email asking if they’d considered the environmental and health impact of using Palm Oil in their products. I received the following reply: “We do not use palm oil in any of our products. In fact, we never have. Palm oil appeared on some of our earlier labels for foodservice back in the late spring as an “and / or” ingredient. You may find our current ingredient listing for our foodservice product under the “Ingredient” tab on our home page.” Their website bears this out. So, not saying it’s healthy, but there is no Palm oil in their products. Would have left this comment with that article, but comments were closed.

Again, thanks for a great site, I’ll keep on reading!
    Cheers!
    -Ken

  31. I am a vegan because I love animals. I do not use vegan cheese. Mostly I eat lentils and rice. But I am glad to be enlightened about palm oil, for it might be found in certain things which I would now know not to use. Your site is very nice and I shall look at it some more.
