When the BBC article broke, I remembered the fact that a pound of beef needs several kilos of grain to be produced, and thought "if we all eat the raw material, surely production wouldn't have to go up?", but finding an excuse for population growth to occur isn't really the right way to go about it in my opinion.

I never really thought about environmentalists keeping quiet about overpopulation due to having kids. It's a very good point, and something that annoys me about parenthood in general. Surely, if you're so compassionate and loving that you NEED to have children (children that are of your own flesh and blood as opposed to, say, adopting an already existing and needy child, which is inifintely less selfish in my opinion), you would not want these children to grow up in a flooded/drought-ridden resource-bare environment? I do not understand one bit the decision to create life only to place it in a starving (in every sense) world. It reminds me of torture.

Environmentalists generally take the view that it is better to adopt a pet than get one from a farm. I would extend that to human animals also.

Great post. Chock full of information. I know that wildlife is pressured in this country by ranchers/farmers, with the complicity of the local government (wildlife agents kill wildlife upon demand of farmers/ranchers, or the agency pays others to do so), so it makes sense that the growing population is going to take more and more land away from the protected areas...but I hadn't actually thought about it before. Sobering. Thanks for posting on BAD!
