A while back I wrote about a contest sponsored by Asian Geographic to choose Asia’s “Big 5″ species. I was digging around the innernets to find out if the results were announced, even sent a note to AAF to find out if they knew, when I clicked on their home page and …
THE BEARS WON!
Here’s the announcement from AAF, along with my most favorite photo of a moon bear ever, Banjo in a tire tube.
It’s official – Asia’s Big 5 are the Tiger, Panda, Orangutan……….and by popular vote…
Asian Elephant and Asiatic Black Bear! That’s right, our beloved and beautiful moon bears not only made the list – they won “by a landslide” (Asian Geographic)!
A short time ago, we asked all of our supporters to participate in voting in Asian Geographic’s search for the two final species considered to be Asian icons. And thanks to you, your friends and your networking – our bears are now part of this unique group.
We are very excited about this development and hope that this much deserved elevation in the moon bears’ status will give us even more leverage to push for the end of their abuse on bile farms and in the illegal wildlife trade.
We will send you full notification of this wonderful news soon with more information, but in the meantime – thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support and your vote!
The results and information on the final group are published in the September issue (No. 58) of Asian Geographic.
