Endangered Species Act Proposed Rule: How to Respond

I searched the Federal Register this morning for the proposed rule by the Bush Administration to eliminate scientific consultation in the Endangered Species Act, but couldn’t find it. Thanks to the New York Times I have the information!

You can also send an e-mail message to Dubya thanks to the Environmental Defense Fund. Might as well flood his e-mail inbox, eh?

The (editorial)Board learned today that the comment period will not formally begin until the proposed revisions appear in the Federal Register; we expect they will appear on Friday, Aug. 15.

After the proposed rule appears, there will be two ways in which to respond:

  • Online, at Regulations.gov
  • By mail, to:
    Public Comment Processing,
    Attention: 1018-AT50
Division of Policy and Directives Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service4401 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 222,
    Arlington, VA 22203

I’ll post the exact entry for comments when it’s online. Promise. Public comments are open to EVERYONE. Whether you live in Afghanistan or Zimbabwe and all the countries in between, you can comment on this proposed rule.

Also, please read the Baraza blog on Wildlife Direct for a non-U.S. perspective on why the ESA is so critical.
