Cookies for Kenya Wildlife

Today’s second post. Scroll down!

mara_cheeta_cubsLast month I wrote about the crisis in Kenya and its devastating effects on wildlife. The violence in Kenya has slowed and a peace agreement reached between government and tribes. But the situation in the Masai Mara is still desperate.

Poaching patrols are limited and there are no volunteers and very little money to pay rangers. Cattle rustlers are sneaking on to the Conservancy at night and stealing cattle from the Masai. Normally, the Conservancy repays the Masai for their lost livestock whenever they’re
stolen or killed by lions. This prevents the Masai from taking revenge on the small lion population, but without funds the situation is growing tense.

The funds raised from around the world last month are nearly gone and once again the Mara Conservancy needs our help. Here’s a story from The Nation about the desperate situation of lions in the Mara.

Again, we need to raise a lot of money – fast – to help protect the Masai Mara. The people of Kenya rely on eco-tourism for their livelihoods. To help them and to save the Masai Mara and other areas, there is a critical need for money – right now. The Mara Conservancy needs $50,000 to run it’s anti-poaching patrols, to compensate farmers when wildlife kill their cattle, to re-employ local people at the park, and other functions.

I want to help but I don’t have limitless funds – that’s where you come in. On Monday, March 17, in my office, I’m selling homemade, cruelty-free cookies for $1.25 for two to support the Mara Conservancy. Every dime I make from the sale of cookies will be donated to the Mara Conservancy through Wildlife Direct. I’ll even show you the receipt as soon as it’s issued, if you like.

I’m selling five types of cookies including two low sugar varieties – Peanut Better cookies made with natural, unsalted peanut butter and maple syrup; and Coconut Pecan cookies also made with a small amount of evaporated cane juice (I do not use refined sugars at all).

The other varieties are Chocolate Chip, Gigantoid Peanut Butter Oatmeal (these are $1 each), and Chewy Chocolate-Raspberry cookies.

If you can’t make it to my office, please donate to the Mara Conservancy or any of the other Kenyan wildlife conservationists who are desperate for funds at this time. All donations are transmitted via PayPal, you don’t need a PayPal account, you can use your credit or debit card. Please leave a comment on the payment page that you’re participating in Cookies for Kenya Wildlife.
