I absolutely adore Farm Sanctuary. I’m going to visit them in early May, stay in their cabins, and work on the farm. I cannot wait to meet all the rescued animals and … rub a pig’s belly! They’ve been at the forefront of rescuing animals from factory farms and other cruel situations for 20 years and have conducted many undercover investigations. They need your help, your money, to pass important legislation for downed animals. READ.
“The largest meat recall in U.S. history (143 million pounds of beef from the Hallmark/Westland slaughter plant) has ignited national concerns over food safety and shed light on an extremely cruel practice of the meat packing industry.
Downed animals, those too sick, diseased or weak to stand, are entering the human food supply.
And, what many consumers dont realize is that this isnt just about cattle and beef. Even the current USDA policy on downers, proven by this recall to be sorely inadequate, completely excludes other downed animals, including pigs. These sick, diseased and injured animals may be left to suffer for hours or even days, and then legally sold for human food.
Farm Sanctuary is calling for the passage of The Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act (HR 661/ S 394) which would ban the slaughter of ALL downed animals, including pigs, sheep and other livestock. Farm Sanctuary is also calling on the USDA to close the current loophole allowing some downed cattle to go to slaughter, and to prevent diseased animals from being used for human food.
Beginning in 1986 with the rescue of Hilda, a downed sheep who had been discarded on a pile of dead animals, Farm Sanctuary has rescued hundreds of downed animals found during investigations at stockyards and slaughterhouses throughout the U.S. We know downer abuse is rampant. We have reams of footage from the past 20 years to prove it. This gross negligence has gone on long enough. The evidence is undeniable, and the solution clear. Animals who cannot stand and walk should not be marketed and slaughtered.
In the wake of this historic meat recall and the resulting public outrage, we have a tremendous opportunity to take the next step and end ALL downer abuse.
Please, make a donation today to the *No Downers Campaign( so that we can continue to lead the charge to end downed animal suffering on todays farms. Then, please let Congress hear your voice to stop this egregious cruelty.
This is a massive fight, which requires massive resources to counter agribusiness lobbyists who oppose our efforts. We can’t do this without you. The time to act is now. Until we address this issue once and for all, sick and helpless animals will continue to lie in agony. Please, help end that pain.”
