Maryland Wants to End Fur Coat Mislabeling

Today’s second post! New alerts on the Take Action! page.

I’ve written a time or two about the Humane Society of the United States’ investigations into garments marked “faux fur” that are made of actual animal fur.

Today, The Washington Post reports that Maryland will attempt to pass a bill requiring manufacturers to list the type and origin of fur on garments, no matter the cost of the garment. The current law requires such labeling but only on items that cost $150 or more. This bill seeks to end the mislabeling as “faux fur” of coats with fur trim from China made from dogs and cats.

Yeah, they do that, y’know. They round up dogs and cats and skin them alive for their coats. I’ve seen a video of a fox being skinned alive and it’s not something I will EVER forget.

You can read all about the HSUS’ campaign to help end this horrible trade and make a donation.

So far, the HSUS campaign has led to laws similar to the Maryland bill getting passed in Massachusetts, New York, and Wisconsin and similar bills are up for vote in Delaware and Illinois. Lobby your legislators to pass similar laws in your state. Call ‘em up! Write!

But, in the middle of all this good news is a disturbing quote from a woman who discovered “the $400 leather jacket with faux fur trim she bought for her daughter was made of raccoon dog hair.

“It was very repulsive to me,” McMillan said. “Dogs are our pets.”

See the hypocrisy there? See the disconnect between animals raised as pets and animals raised as food? All animals have central nervous systems and can feel pain and have emotions, so why was this woman more concerned that a dog was skinned alive for her daughter’s coat than for the cow that suffered great torture during its short life to die a hideous death?

If you want more information on how dogs and cats are tortured and sold in markets in China, please visit Jill’s Blog at Animals Asia.

What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.

  1. it is wrong to skin animals and thats why im doing a school project on this.

  2. Good luck with your project. I hope you plan to include cows, pigs, sheep, ducks, and other non-human animals in your “it is wrong to skin animals” assessment.
