I don’t make New Year’s resolutions because I think the entire idea does nothing more than crowd the gym for three months. However, I want to target my donations this year to specific causes that I feel very strongly about instead of scattering small amounts around the world. I’ve chosen five organizations that I’ll donate to monthly, and I’ll drop two of my six memberships and raise my membership profile in the remaining four. I signed up for all of this earlier today and I feel pretty good.
Then, I got this poem in my Daily Ray of Hope e-mail message from the Sierra Club and it struck me:
Those of you who are scattered,
simplify your worrying lives. There is one
righteousness: Water the fruit trees,
and don’t water the thorns.
–Rumi
You thorns better take notice – there’ll be no more watering.
