Still Think Factory Farming Can’t Hurt You?

I know that you eat beef, and other carcass, from factory farms. I should think by now that everyone knows how farming has become industrialized, but in case you’ve kept your head in the sand here’s a little primer. That site is sponsored by Farm Sanctuary, a lovely group that rescues farm animals from cruel and horrifying circumstances and gives them a protected home. Yes, I am a member of Farm Sanctuary.

Still think there’s no difference between your pet and the food on your plate? Think it’s OK to raise animals in disgusting, cruel conditions just so you can eat them? Think you can’t be hurt by all those antibiotics they pump into the animals to prevent the diseases they get from being kept in dirty, crowded conditions?

Think again.

The Food and Drug Administration is about to approve a cattle antibiotic that can cause resistance in humans. The Washington Post story states: “The drug, called cefquinome, belongs to a class of highly potent antibiotics that are among medicine’s last defenses against several serious human infections. No drug from that class has been approved in the United States for use in animals.

You wanna know why no drugs from that class have been approved by the FDA? Because “giving cefquinome to animals would probably speed the emergence of microbes resistant to that important class of antibiotics, as has happened with other drugs. Those super-microbes could then spread to people.”

The FDA was all set to reject this drug, produced by InterVet Pharmaceuticals, for use in cattle but they’ve changed their minds. It will likely gain approval this week for use in cattle to prevent bovine respiratory disease. Cows get this disease because they’re confined on top of each other in rather dirty conditions. In factory farms. Factory farming exists because Americans can’t stop filling their fat faces with fast food and generally believe that the animal kingdom exists for their exploitation.

Well folks, looks like that exploitation might be the end of your ability to find a drug to fight off a serious disease. Enjoy that burger.
