My friend Ozzie sent this New York Times story about Walmart’s push to sell energy-saving light bulbs.
That’s right, Walmart wants to help reduce global warming pollution. They’re restructuring their light bulb displays to feature the cool, compact, twisty bulbs and entice shoppers to buy more of them. Their goal is to push the energy-efficient bulbs into 100 million homes by 2008.
Just think of the carbon dioxide emissions we could reduce if everyone bought these bulbs to replace their energy-wasting incandescent bulbs. I applaud Walmart for taking this action and hope to see other major retailers take similar actions.
I am slowly replacing the incandescent bulbs in my apartment with the twisties. I like them a lot and I’m sure I’ll enjoy the savings on my energy bill a lot.
What are you waiting for?

I’ve used them for almost a year now and when the weatherization and energy assistance department went to my mom’s to assess her home, they gave her 20 of them to replace regular bulbs.
Course, I just use them cuz they’re cute
Wow, did they also assess her home for free? ‘Cause I need to set up something like that for my Dad. His energy bills are ridiculous and always have been.
I think they’re cute, too, but as you read in the story that’s not always the case.

Yes, contact your social services or energy provider to see if they have a similar program. It is based on income and there was a year waiting list. But, not only did they give her bulbs, they replaced her ailing furnace, taped the vents for better air supply, installed a programmable thermostat and blew in attic insulation. They also replaced her fridge because it was old and not efficient any more. All we were expecting was somebody to weatherstrip the door!
